Extract assembly from Global Assembly Cache (GAC) with network drive mapping

If you want to extract an assembly (.dll) from the Global Assembly Cache you can use the following method which doesn't require a third party tool:

Open the Explorer and go to "Tools" in order to map a network drive.

Map the Global Assembly Cache as a network drive to extract an assembly.

There you can enter the server name and the folder: \\SERVERNAME\FOLDER. In my case it is: \\moss2007\c$\windows\assembly. You don't need to share the folder if you are an administrator. After the mapping you can browse the GAC and extract an assembly.

Windows Server 2008 or Vista - Large file copy from a network share and network freeze

If you try to copy a large file from a network share sometimes Windows Server 2008 or Vista freezes the network connection although you have Service Pack 1 installed. After that you have to reboot in order to get your network connection to work. You can find some discussions without any solution. I had the same problem and this workaround works for me:

Dont click at the more information button. keep the windows closed.

  1. Never click at the "More information" button which is calculating the speed. Since I don't look at the information even file copies of 26GB are working - up and down.
  2. Copy large files one by one using the crtl+c key combination.
  3. Don't drag and drop files or folders.

With an open windows showing the speed my network freezes sometimes.

I hope it works for somebody too.

Windows Server 2008 and Lotus Notes - Single Sign On

I can't say why but it's not working. Although I have the Windows Service running (the German version as you can see in the image).

The SNotes Single Sign On service running in german.

And I have configured Notes to accept my operating system credentials.

Setting the Lotus Notes properties to use my system login for single sign on.

Maybe it's the German service running in the background or the 64bit operating system. If I have figured out I will post a solution. If someone knows please write a comment.

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Live Writer

It's time again to talk about Windows Server 2008... and Windows Live Writer.

Logo of windows live writer.

It just doesn't want to install if you start the WLInstaller.exe. Instead you should download the *.msi packages which can be installed on Windows Server 2008 x64 as well Windows XP x64. You can download the *.msi packages from windows-live.de. You can find the final versions at the bottom of the web site.
After installation you should run Windows Update in order to apply the newest updates to your software (works only if you have activated to check for "Windows and other products from Microsoft").

Btw: If you are using Movable Type and Live Writer and you are getting the "invalid login" error you have to use your API password instead. Where to find it:

  1. Login to your blog and click on your username to view your profile.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and reveal your "Web Services Password".

This password is "For use by Activity feeds and with XML-RPC and Atom-enabled clients".

Windows Server 2008 as a Workstation

Windows Server 2008 and Bluetooth

Windows Server 2008 is a great operating system... especially the 64bit version.

Windows Server 2008 Homepage with a cool picture showing a server transformer.

But why?

  • The driver support is great... you can use the Vista drivers ;)
  • The applications runs fast without any problems.
  • I can use all of my 4GB RAM :)
  • Features are not activated by default, you activate them if you need them.
  • The Citrix client is running. (If you have to use VPN clients you should think about a second operating system -> Windows XP)

And yes, Bluetooth is running... I got it working without any problems on a DELL 630:

Bluetooth is working on a Windows Server 2008 installation.

  1. Install the "Dell_Wireless-360-Module-wit_A01_R155463.exe"... (x64 in my case)
  2. Reboot... (If Windows detects new hardware after reboot DON'T install them)
  3. Install the "Toshiba Bluetooth Stack" for Windows Vista...
  4. Reboot....
  5. Wait until every hardware is installed correctly...
  6. Ready.

It works great...
