Updates to SharePoint Products and Technologies
- Database Integrity: The Database Statistics timer job now defragments content databases using the online index rebuild feature of SQL Server 2005 . Note that the rebuild of the index starts after applying SP2 and that your content databases should not exceed 100GB.
- Read-Only Content Databases: Users cannot perform task which are writing to content databases when you set a content database and its associated site collections to read-only. The user interface is now modified and the user does not receive errors.
- Content Deployment and Site Variations (MOSS): You can check and repair variations using stsadm.exe. There are also performance optimizations when propagating large amount of variation content.
- Stsadm Enhancements: There are a lot of new commands to the stsadm.exe like removing orphaned objects from the database.
- Excel Services and InfoPath Forms Services (MOSS): “SP2 includes a broad range of fixes and enhancements that improve the performance, security, stability, and usability of Excel Services. SP2 makes it easier to configure Excel Web Access Web Parts on new sites. Several rendering, calculation, and security issues have been resolved.
SP2 also offers a range of improvements for users of InfoPath Forms Services. Performance enhancements in SP2 reduce both the memory requirements and the page load times for large browser-rendered forms. SP2 also improves the browser rendering of various controls, such as the Cannot be blank red asterisk and the rich text field.”
- Improved User Experience with Forms Authentication: Improved client integration with Froms Based Authentication.
- Browser Support: Supports now IE8 in level 1 and Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 in level 2.
- Getting Ready for SharePoint 2010: If you want to upgrade to SharePoint 2010 you need SP2. There is also an extension to the stsadm.exe used to check for potential upgrade issues.
